Common (and not so common) issues
IP address as hostname and no open ports…
You might come across devices that have the IP address in the Name field instead of the hostname, along with no open ports showing up.This is usually due to the device lacking a DNS entry. Create a hostname for the device in your DNS and that should take care of the problem.
I’ve removed a device from my network, but it’s showing up in the scan…
This is likely a DNS issue. Maybe you haven’t cleaned your DNS since removing the device?
I’m having issues getting it to install…
Make sure you’re installing it as an administrator. That is required.
Frequently asked questions
Does the scan automatically update?
![Scanner Scanner](/uploads/1/3/3/9/133937983/781205152.jpg)
No. With the exception of the up/down status, this is information that shouldn’t be changing with any kind of regularity. If you want to keep track of the online/offline status of your devices, check outthe Connectivity Dashboard.
How do I get an updated scan?
Just click the Start a new Scan button. You’ll be given an option to export your current data (because it will be overwritten),then you can escan your IP ranges.
How do I access the IP Scanner?
The easiest way to access your scan data is to mouse over the Tools & Apps menu at the top of any Spiceworks Community page, then select IP Scanner. Just make sure you’re logged in to the Spiceworks account your IP Scanner was installed with.
Alternatively, you could just bookmark this link to get there.
Other needlessly difficult ways to access:
- Windows: You can get to the IP Scanner by right-clicking the systray icon and select Browse to Surface Scan Inventory. The URL is your personal scan page. So, if you want to access your IP Scanner from other computers, you can easily do so using that URL. This will alsolet you initiate scans from any computer as long as the device where the agent is installed is online. Because of this, you should becareful about sharing that URL.
- Mac: You can use the tray icon to Browse to Surface Scan Inventory, or you could use your GUID in order to get there:
- In terminal, enter
cat /Library/Frameworks/Mono.framework/Versions/Current/etc/mono/registry/LocalMachine/software/spiceworks/agent shell/values.xml
- Get the GUID value.
- Open your preferred browser and paste this as the URL:
https://apps.spiceworks.com/tools/device-inventory?agent_uuid=<GUID goes here>
How does the scan work?
After you’ve entered the IP range, the agent will talk to Active Directory, if available, to get device details. Then DNS is consultedfor the info it has. If both were detected, the information is compared in order to get the correct data. After that, the agent checks for open ports and uses ping.
How do I know if the scan is running?
Just look at the refresh symbol on the left side. Is it spinning? If so, the scan is running. Or, at least the web page thinks the agentis scanning. If it’s spinning for several minutes and you’re not seeing any results, the agent might have lost connection. There’s a 12 minute timeout on the scanner, so it’ll take that long for an error message to show up.
How do I delete my data?
Your scan results will stay there until you run a new scan, so you can always check back to your IP Scanner results page to see yourmost recent scan. If you want to remove that data, here are te instructions:
- Choose the IP Scanner you want to delete devices from by clicking the drop-down arrow next to Devices from all scanners.
- Now, from the same drop-down menu, you should see an option to Erase scan data for that IP Scanner. Click that and confirm to get rid of everything.
- If you want to only delete some devices, click the checkboxes next to those devices in your device table and then click Delete at the bottom of the page.
What data is collected by the IP Scanner?
In addition to the information displayed by the IP scanner, the agent itself collects the following information from the device it’s installed on:
- Hostname
- IPs (in order to suggest subnets)
- Public IP (when it connects to the Spiceworks Community)
- MAC Address (to help identify the unique agent)
- Operating system
Data communication
The IP Scanner is remotely accessible in two ways. You access the service in a browser, and agent shell device accesses the service directly when it runs a scan. In both cases communication is restricted to HTTPS only.
We use current security protocols (SSL/TLS) to ensure both browser sessions (viewing the IP Scanner results) and agent connection are secure.
The agent cannot be configured to use non-secure URLs, so even if the agent configuration is manipulated to use HTTP, the agent service will refuse to check in over a non-secure connection.
Agent service
All of the agent’s modules are checked at startup and must be signed, so it isn’t possible to sideload unauthorized modules (.dll files) that were not created by Spiceworks (either shipped with the agent or downloaded from Spiceworks by the agent).
An agent’s service configuration and scan history is stored in the install directory. Some of the information is not stored encrypted, so authenticated users on the device will have access to view the configuration and history.
Additional Spiceworks security information
Please read this document for more information on how Spiceworks ensures the securityof your data.
Where your data is being stored
All the data collected by the agents is stored securely on the Spiceworks servers. You can request your account be closed and device data deleted. Upon deletion the device data is permanently erased from the Spiceworks Inventory, and will be irrecoverable once our backups expire. Should you wish to close your account you can email [email protected] with a request. Please note that there is some data that will have been anonymized into aggregate datasets. This information is not identifiable as related to your account, and therefore cannot be deleted if your account is closed.

Working Nature of Advanced Port Scanner
Advanced Port Scanner helps you detect open ports on the computers connected to your network. The scanner will provide maximum information about all network devices, including computer names, IP and MAC addresses, names of manufacturers of network cards and Wi-Fi routers. It can identify the software running on those computers, like operating systems, HTTP and FTP servers. The program could scan the entire network or for a given IP range and find the connected devices. However, the user cannot use various IP ranges or network masks simultaneously. Fortunately, it is possible to manage the number of threads the program uses to find the ports. It is to note that increasing the detection speed needs more CPU usage.
Once after scanning is completed, the user could perform various operations on the selected device, which include opening shared folders in Windows Explorer as well as browsing local HTTP and FTP sites. If Radmin Viewer is installed on the computer, then it is possible to carry out more complex operations, like taking control of a remote machine, sending messages, transferring files and communicating via voice chat. Update skype for mac.
The Advanced Port Scanner program can create reports, and it can save or exports your results of scanning for scanning purposes and other operations in .html, .xml, and .csv formats. Also, the reports can be sent directly to a printer. Advanced Port Scanner Mac is a solution for those users who do not need to perform any sophisticated operations on the network or do not have enough budget. It allows you one-click access to various network computer resources such as HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and shared folders. The program finds all computers running on RDP or Radmin and lets its user connect to any one of them with one click.
The remote PC shutdown feature permits you shut down any remote computer or a group of computers running on Windows. Wake up these machines remotely with Advanced Port Scanner if their network cards support the Wake-On-LAN function. There is also an option to run quick commands (ping, tracert, telnet, and SSH) on a selected computer. The program has a user-friendly interface, and it can be directly launched from the installer without needing any manual installation.
